Make sure to enter \u201c17-108 (Restoring Internet Freedom)\u201d in the Proceeding(s) box.&nbsp; <br><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the latest net neutrality news, following legal action <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mozilla.org\/blog\/2019\/10\/04\/breaking-down-this-weeks-net-neutrality-court-decision\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against the Commission by Mozilla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the general public has been invited to comment on the negative effects of repealing net neutrality. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case you need a primer, in June 2018, net neutrality \u2014 a law that basically allowed for all Internet data to be treated equally by Internet service providers \u2014 was repealed. With this law in place, the FCC had the authority to regulate ISPs to ensure that they didn\u2019t engage in shady practices, such as blocking or slowing down certain kinds of content based on third-party interests (for example, slowing down your Netflix connection so you\u2019ll continue your cable subscription). Net neutrality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/what-is-a-ddos-attack\/\">protected<\/a> consumers and is considered by many to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inverse.com\/article\/39338-net-neutrality-startups-innovation-fcc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">essential for technological innovation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With net neutrality gone, ISPs have free reign.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the court ruling mostly found in favor of the FCC, it had some misgivings about the effects of the repeal in three key areas:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public safety<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulations of broadband infrastructure<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifeline \u2014 an FCC program that helps make communications services more affordable for low-income families<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the court, the FCC has invited the public to comment on the FCC\u2019s net neutrality stance and its impact on the areas outlined above, in what many consider to be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DA-20-168A1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cryptically written and confusingly titled press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The document doesn\u2019t even mention net neutrality by name, but obtusely refers to the \u201cD.C. CIRCUIT\u2019S MOZILLA DECISION\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, FCC commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel released her own, far more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.fcc.gov\/public\/attachments\/DOC-362558A1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">straightforward press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, urging the public to \u201craise their voices\u201d. The commissioner states that \u201cThe FCC got it wrong when it repealed net neutrality. The decision put the agency on the wrong side of history, the American public, and the law\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the overall negative impact of net neutrality repeal remains to be determined, we\u2019ve already seen it impact public safety. Santa Clara County Fire Chief Anthony Bowden claims that the fire department\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018\/08\/21\/verizon-data-throttling-hampered-mendocino-wildfire-response\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ISP throttled their data plan to such an extent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it rendered their service useless, and slowed down their response to the Mendocino wildfires in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to comment on net neutrality<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to comment on the impact of repealing net neutrality, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/ecfs\/filings\/express\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">add your feedback to the FCC&#8217;s Electronic Filing System<\/span><\/a>.
