{"id":753,"date":"2018-03-29T09:25:07","date_gmt":"2018-03-29T16:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/?p=753"},"modified":"2023-09-27T13:01:12","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T20:01:12","slug":"2018-certificate-transparency-requirements-google-chrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/2018-certificate-transparency-requirements-google-chrome\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 Certificate Transparency Requirements by Google&nbsp;Chrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>SSL certificates are a great way to protect your customers\u2019 and visitors\u2019 data as well as convey the validity and trustworthiness of your website.<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nAnd with Google\u2019s intentions to improve the legitimacy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/google-chrome-to-launch-an-https-first-mode\/\">SSL certificates<\/a>, it\u2019s a great time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/brand\/comodo-ssl-certificates\">get a Comodo SSL<\/a> to benefit from these changes.<\/p>\n<p>Google plans to improve SSL <a href=\"https:\/\/www.certificate-transparency.org\/\">Certificate Transparency<\/a> within the Chrome browser with the goal of strengthening the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/apple-and-google-are-trying-to-stop-airtag-stalking\/\">security<\/a> and reliability of the Internet. Beginning in April 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.google.com\/a\/chromium.org\/forum\/#!msg\/ct-policy\/sz_3W_xKBNY\/6jq2ghJXBAAJ\">Google will require<\/a> all new SSL\/TLS certificates issued by Certificate Authorities (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comodoca.com\/en-us\/\">Comodo CA<\/a>) to have records in publicly-available Certificate Transparency logs.<\/p>\n<p>Following this change, the Chrome browser will be able to detect certificates that were fraudulently issued by private organizations.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s Certificate Transparency?<\/h2>\n<p>Certificate Transparency is a process in which HTTPS domains are reviewed via public records to verify that the SSL certificates are legitimate. By monitoring the status of all SSLs on the Internet, Google intends to empower SSL providers to be transparent about the certificates they issue.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/crt.sh\/\">crt.sh<\/a> is a simple but highly effective Certificate Search website, where you can discover if there were any SSL certificates issued for a given domain name.<\/p>\n<p>Certificate Transparency makes it impossible for a Certificate Authority to issue an SSL certificate for a domain without the certificate being visible to the owner of that domain. By exposing the process, Google hopes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/google-users-in-europe-to-get-a-reject-all-cookies-button\/\">protect<\/a> users from being duped by certificates that were mistakenly or maliciously issued.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-761\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/0.jpg\" alt=\"certificate-transparency-google\" width=\"640\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/0.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/0-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What Do Customers with SSLs from Trusted SSL Providers Need to Do?<\/h2>\n<p>The good news is that no action is needed. Trusted Certificate Authorities (including our partner, Comodo CA) are ready to meet this requirement.
