You can also download the certificate from your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/can-i-download-certificate-somewhere-on-your-site\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSLs.com account<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The file usually has the .crt extension.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CA bundle file (you can download this together with the certificate, or from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/Where-do-I-get-a-Bundle-file\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this page in our Knowledgebase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private key file generated together with the CSR (Certificate Signing Request) and usually located on the same server.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is worth saying that you need to purchase the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elements.heroku.com\/addons\/ssl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSL Endpoint<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your application at Heroku, which costs $20\/month.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, you can have a <\/span><strong>free <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certificate installed using the <\/span><strong>Heroku SSL option<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this to be done, please use the following command: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heroku certs:add example.crt example.key.<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, DNS settings for each domain should be updated on your app accordingly.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>*<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You also need to use the flag <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;type sni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if your app already has the SSL Endpoint add-on enabled to migrate to the free option.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/how-can-i-get-my-certificate-reissued\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reissued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/how-to-renew-an-ssl-certificate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renewed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> certificate can be updated on the application using the following command: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heroku certs:update server.crt server.key<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the server.crt and server.key should be the new certificate and new Key<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to install your certificate, feel free to follow such steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create SSL Endpoint by running the following command in the terminal of your local environment:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>$ heroku addons:create ssl:endpoint<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upload the .crt file into the same SSL directory for your application and combine the main certificate and CA bundle into one separate file using the command:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>$ cat example.crt bundle.crt &gt; server.crt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Import the certificate and private key to the endpoint with the following command:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>$ heroku certs:add server.crt server.key<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will see the details of the certificate and hostname assigned to your SSL endpoint in the output:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding SSL Endpoint to example\u2026 done<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">example now served by <\/span><\/em><strong><em>example-2121.herokussl.com.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certificate details:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expires on:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issuer:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starts at:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It may take up to 30 minutes (or as long as 2 hours, in rare cases) for the endpoint to be created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Once it is done, you need to direct requests for your secured domain to the endpoint hostname. If the domain is not added to the app yet, you can do it with the following command:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>$ heroku domains:add www.example.com<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding www.example.com to example\u2026 done<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To direct requests to the endpoint hostname, create a CNAME record:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Record type &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Name &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Target<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;CNAME &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; www &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; example-2121.herokussl.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar record for Wildcard certificates:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Record type &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Name &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Target<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;CNAME &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; * &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; example-2121.herokussl.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Setting a CNAME record for the root domain (@) will overwrite all the other records set up for the domain. For this reason, you\u2019ll need your certificate to cover the subdomain (www.example.com, sub.example.com, *.example.com) so that you are able to create a CNAME for the subdomain.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible to use a certificate issued for the bare domain (example.com) ONLY if you use a DNS provider that supplies a CNAME-like functionality at the zone apex.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once all the mentioned steps are done, the certificate is installed and working via HTTPS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To check if the certificate was installed correctly, use any of these checkers:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/decoder.link\/sslchecker\">Decoder.link<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssllabs.com\/ssltest\/\">SSLlabs<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In order to install a certificate on Heroku, you need to have the following files: Certificate file sent by the Certificate Authority once the certificate is issued.
