There are two possible ways to generate a CSR on a Zimbra mail server: in the Zimbra Admin WebApp, or using the Zimbra command line interface.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> Zimbra supports only one CSR and private key file. Generating a new CSR will replace the previous CSR and private key files.<\/span><\/p>\n

CSR generation in the Zimbra Admin Console<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

By default the Zimbra Administration web interface can be accessed via the following URL:<\/span><\/p>\n

https:\/\/<\/strong>yourdomain.com<\/strong>:7071<\/strong><\/p>\n

 – yourdomain.com<\/strong> is the Zimbra server hostname, usually assigned during the initial Zimbra setup.<\/span><\/p>\n

Log into the Administration Console with your admin credentials (the default admin username is <\/span>admin@yourdomain.com<\/span>) and follow these steps:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Click <\/span>Configure<\/strong> in the menu list on the left:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Click Certificates<\/strong> in the left pane, then click the gear icon on the top right and select Install Certificate<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Select the needed servername from the drop-down menu and click Next<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Select Generate the CSR for the commercial certificate authorizer<\/strong> and click Next<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

5. <\/span>Fill in the details as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

Key Length: the length of private and public keys. The current industry standard is 2048- and 4096- bits.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Common Name<\/strong>: the domain that is your server hostname (yourdomain.com). Note<\/strong>: The Use Wildcard Common Name<\/strong> option should be used only if you have a <\/span>wildcard certificate<\/span><\/a>. In this case, the Common Name should be specified in the following format: *.example.com<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Country Name<\/strong>: the country should be entered as a two-letter ISO 3166-1 -compliant country code<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

State\/Province<\/strong>: state, province or region; you can enter the city if this field is not applicable for your country.<\/span><\/p>\n

City<\/strong>: your city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Organization Name<\/strong>: company name. Note<\/strong>: For <\/span>Domain Validation certificates<\/span><\/a>, you can simply enter NA<\/strong><\/em> as DV certificates do not include company details.<\/span><\/p>\n

Organization Unit<\/strong>: company department. Note<\/strong>: You can enter NA<\/strong><\/em> as this field is not included into certificates.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subject Alternative Names:<\/strong> SANs may be specified only if you have a multi-domain certificate<\/a>. For other certificates, please leave this field empty.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Once all fields are filled, click Next<\/strong> to continue:<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

7. <\/span>Click <\/span>Download the CSR<\/strong> and save the CSR file. To proceed with the <\/span>certificate activation<\/span><\/a> in your SSLs.com account, open the CSR file with any text editor (e.g., Notepad or TextEdit) and copy-paste the entire content into the CSR submission box.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> Before submitting the CSR in your account, we recommend checking it for possible issues with this online tool<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

CSR generation using Zimbra Certificate CLI<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

You can use the <\/span>zmcertmgr<\/strong> command line tool to generate a CSR and manage certificates. To do it, you will need SSH access to the server. To use this tool, log in as <\/span>root<\/strong> for Zimbra version prior to 8.7, or as the <\/span>zimbra<\/strong> user for versions 8.7 and higher. To switch to the <\/span>zimbra<\/strong> user, you can run this command (you need to be logged in as <\/span>root <\/strong>\u2014 you can run <\/span>sudo su<\/strong><\/em> to switch to <\/span>root<\/strong>):<\/span><\/p>\n

su – zimbra<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The default location of the <\/span>zmcertmgr<\/strong> tool is <\/span>\/opt\/zimbra\/bin\/zmcertmgr<\/strong>. To generate a CSR, run the following command:<\/span><\/p>\n

\/opt\/zimbra\/bin\/zmcertmgr createcsr comm -new -subject “\/C=<\/strong>CC<\/strong>\/ST=<\/strong>State<\/strong>\/L=<\/strong>City<\/strong>\/O=<\/strong>Company<\/strong>\/OU=NA\/CN=<\/strong>yourdomain.com<\/strong>” -noDefaultSubjectAltName<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Replace the values as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

C = Country, should be specified as a two-letter ISO 3166-1-compliant country code<\/a>. The list of country codes can be checked here.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

ST <\/strong>= State or province; enter the city if not applicable<\/span><\/p>\n

L <\/strong>= Locality (city)<\/span><\/p>\n

O <\/strong>= Organization (company name); you can enter NA<\/strong><\/em> if this field is not applicable<\/span><\/p>\n

OU <\/strong>= Organization Unit (company name); you can enter NA<\/strong><\/em> if this field is not applicable<\/span><\/p>\n

CN <\/strong>= Common Name (domain that is your server hostname). If you have a <\/span>wildcard certificate<\/span><\/a>, enter the Common Name in this format: *.yourdomain.com<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is an example command for reference: \/opt\/zimbra\/bin\/zmcertmgr createcsr comm -new -subject “\/C=US\/ST=California\/L=Los Angeles\/O=MyCompany Inc\/OU=NA\/CN=server.mydomain.com” -noDefaultSubjectAltName<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The output will look like this:<\/span><\/p>\n

If you need to generate a CSR with multiple domains to activate a <\/span>multi-domain certificate<\/span><\/a>, you can adjust the command to include SANs in the following way:<\/span><\/p>\n

\/opt\/zimbra\/bin\/zmcertmgr createcsr comm -new -subject “\/C=<\/strong>CC<\/strong>\/ST=<\/strong>State<\/strong>\/L=<\/strong>City<\/strong>\/O=<\/strong>Company<\/strong>\/OU=NA\/CN=<\/strong>yourdomain.com<\/strong>” -subjectAltNames \u201c<\/strong>subdomain.yourdomain.com<\/strong>,<\/strong>otherdomain.com<\/strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Additional domains should be typed in instead of <\/span>subdomain.yourdomain.com<\/strong> and<\/span> otherdomain.com<\/strong>.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

The CSR will be saved into this file: <\/span>\/opt\/zimbra\/ssl\/zimbra\/commercial\/commercial.csr<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can open the file with a text editor like Nano, or run this command to print it to console:<\/span><\/p>\n

cat \/opt\/zimbra\/ssl\/zimbra\/commercial\/commercial.csr<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

To proceed with <\/span>certificate activation<\/span><\/a>, copy the entire output including —–BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST—–<\/em> and —–END CERTIFICATE REQUEST—–<\/em>, and paste it into the CSR box in your SSLs.com account.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before submitting the CSR in your account, we recommend checking it for possible issues with this online tool<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong> The corresponding private key will be saved in the same directory as <\/span>\/opt\/zimbra\/ssl\/zimbra\/commercial\/commercial.key<\/strong>. The key will be required for certificate installation on Zimbra.<\/span><\/p>\n
