{"id":149,"date":"2019-07-09T07:21:08","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T07:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/?p=149"},"modified":"2021-05-27T11:05:56","modified_gmt":"2021-05-27T11:05:56","slug":"how-to-install-an-ssl-certificate-on-zimbra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/how-to-install-an-ssl-certificate-on-zimbra\/","title":{"rendered":"How to install an SSL certificate on Zimbra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your certificate is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/okay-so-i-ordered-an-ssl-how-do-i-get-it-to-work-on-my-domain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and issued, you can proceed with installation on Zimbra. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two ways to install a certificate on a Zimbra mail server: in the Zimbra Administration Console WebApp, or using the Zimbra command line interface. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The preferred installation method depends on where the CSR for your certificate was generated. If the CSR was not generated on Zimbra, the certificate should be installed via the Zimbra Certificate CLI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wysiwyg-font-size-large\"><strong>Certificate installation in the Zimbra Admin Console<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By default you can access the Zimbra Administration web interface with the following URL:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>https:\/\/<\/strong><strong>yourdomain.com<\/strong><strong>:7071<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; yourdomain.com<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the Zimbra server hostname, usually assigned during the initial Zimbra setup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Log into the Administration Console with your admin credentials (the default admin username is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admin@yourdomain.com<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and follow these steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Click <\/span><strong>Configure<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the menu list on the left:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/zim1.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Click <strong>Certificates<\/strong> in the left pane, then click the gear icon on the top right and select <strong>Install Certificate<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/zim2.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Select the needed servername from the drop-down menu and click <strong>Next<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/zim3.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Select <strong>Install the commercially signed certificate<\/strong> and click <strong>Next<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/zim_5.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Review the details that were submitted for CSR generation and click <strong>Next<\/strong> to proceed:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/zim_6.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Upload your certificate file and CA bundle certificates. Your certificate (the .crt file) and CA bundle can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/can-i-download-certificate-somewhere-on-your-site\">downloaded<\/a> from your SSLs.com account. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Note that the download will contain CA bundle certificates in a single .ca-bundle file. You can manually save the CA certificates into separate files using any text editor (e.g., Notepad or TextEdit); the top-most two certificates are intermediate CA certificates, and the last certificate is the root CA. Sectigo (former Comodo) CA Bundlecertificates in separate files can be downloaded here:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/support.sectigo.com\/Com_KnowledgeDetailPage?Id=kA01N000000rfBO\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RSA Bundles\/separate files<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/support.sectigo.com\/Com_KnowledgeDetailPage?Id=kA01N000000rfGE\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ECC Bundles\/separate files<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, CA certificates for Domain Validation certificates should be uploaded the following way:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span class=\"wysiwyg-underline\">RSA <\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Root CA: <strong><span id=\"j_id0:j_id11\"><span id=\"j_id0:j_id11:j_id12:j_id110:j_id111:j_id113\">USERTrust RSA Certification Authority [ Cross Signed\u00a0]<\/span><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nIntermediate CA: <strong><span id=\"j_id0:j_id11\"><span id=\"j_id0:j_id11:j_id12:j_id110:j_id111:j_id113\">Sectigo RSA Domain Validation Secure Server CA [ Intermediate ]<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"wysiwyg-underline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>ECC<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Root CA: <strong><span id=\"j_id0:j_id11\"><span id=\"j_id0:j_id11:j_id12:j_id110:j_id111:j_id113\">USERTrust ECC\u00a0Certification Authority [ Cross Signed\u00a0]<\/span><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nIntermediate CA:\u00a0<strong><span id=\"j_id0:j_id11\"><span id=\"j_id0:j_id11:j_id12:j_id110:j_id111:j_id113\">Sectigo ECC\u00a0Domain Validation Secure Server CA [ Intermediate ]<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the files are uploaded, click <strong>Next<\/strong> to confirm and continue:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/zim_7.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Click <strong>Install<\/strong> to install the certificate. The process may take a few minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/zim_8.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Once certificate installation is completed, the following message will be displayed, confirming the installation was successful:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/9.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Log in as the <strong>zimbra<\/strong> user with this command (you need to be logged in as <strong>root<\/strong> to run this command \u2014 you can run <strong>sudo su<\/strong> to switch to <strong>root<\/strong>): <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em><strong>su &#8211; zimbra<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nRestart the services to apply the changes with this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <em><strong>zmcontrol restart<\/strong><\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. After the restart, you can check the installed certificate by going to <strong>Configuration<\/strong> &gt;&gt; <strong>Certificates<\/strong> &gt;&gt; click on the gear icon and select <strong>View Certificate<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/zim_10.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11. The window will display the certificate and services it was installed for:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/11.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The certificate has been installed for the following services:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>LDAP service<\/strong>: port 389 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Mailbox service<\/strong>: ports 8443, 7071 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>MTA service<\/strong>: ports 25 (SMTP TLS), 465 (SMTP SSL), 7110 (POP3 TLS), 7143 (IMAP TLS), 7993 (IMAP SSL), 7995 (POP3 SSL) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Proxy service<\/strong>: 443, 110 (POP3 TLS), 143 (IMAP TLS), 993 (IMAP SSL), 995 (POP3 SSL).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certificate installation can be checked using <a href=\"https:\/\/decoder.link\/sslchecker\/\">this online tool<\/a>.<\/span><a><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"wysiwyg-font-size-large\"><strong>Certificate installation using Zimbra Certificate CLI<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use the <\/span><strong>zmcertmgr<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> command line utility to manage and install certificates. SSH access to the server will be needed for it. To use this tool, log in as <\/span><strong>root<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Zimbra version prior to 8.7, or as the <\/span><strong>zimbra<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> user for versions 8.7 and higher. Switch to <\/span><strong>root<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by running this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>sudo su<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To switch to the <\/span><strong>zimbra<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> user (for Zimbra 8.7 and higher), you can run this command (you need to be logged in as <\/span><strong>root<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">):<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>su &#8211; zimbra<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The default location of the <\/span><strong>zmcertmgr<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tool is <\/span><strong>\/opt\/zimbra\/bin\/zmcertmgr<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To install the certificate, follow these steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Upload the certificate (.crt) and CA bundle (.ca-bundle) files to any directory on the server. Your certificate and CA bundle can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/can-i-download-certificate-somewhere-on-your-site\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">downloaded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from your SSLs.com account. If you did not generate the CSR for your certificate on Zimbra, also upload the private key that was generated with your CSR.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this example, the certificate and CA bundle were uploaded into the \/opt\/ directory.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In all further commands, replace <\/span><strong>\/opt\/yourdomain_com.crt <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span> <strong>\/opt\/yourdomain_com.ca-bundle <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the appropriate file locations and names.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><em><strong>Note:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the CA bundle has to contain the intermediate CA certificates, as well as the root CA certificate. We recommend using the .ca-bundle file <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/can-i-download-certificate-somewhere-on-your-site\/\">downloaded from your account<\/a> for this purpose, as it will contain all needed certificates.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Verify that your certificate and private key match by using this command:<br \/>\n<em><strong>\/opt\/zimbra\/bin\/zmcertmgr verifycrt comm \u00a0\/opt\/zimbra\/ssl\/zimbra\/commercial\/commercial.key <\/strong><strong>\/opt\/yourdomain_com.crt<\/strong> <strong>\/opt\/yourdomain_com.ca-bundle<\/strong><\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/zim_12.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Deploy the certificate by running this command:<br \/>\n<em><strong>\/opt\/zimbra\/bin\/zmcertmgr deploycrt comm <\/strong><strong>\/opt\/yourdomain_com.crt<\/strong> <strong>\/opt\/yourdomain_com.ca-bundle<\/strong><\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nFor successful execution, the output should look like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/13.png\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you did not generate the CSR on Zimbra, first place the private key for your certificate into the following directory: <\/span><strong>\/opt\/zimbra\/ssl\/zimbra\/commercial\/<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The private key file needs to be named <\/span><strong>commercial.key<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If needed, replace the existing file.<\/span><\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can verify the certificate details by running this command:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\/<em>opt\/zimbra\/bin\/zmcertmgr viewdeployedcrt<\/em><\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is an example output:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/14.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restart the Zimbra services with the following command (you need to be logged in as the <\/span><strong>zimbra<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> user; you can switch to the Zimbra user with <\/span><em><strong>su &#8211; zimbra<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>zmcontrol restart<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will complete the installation process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the services are restarted, you can check certificate installation with <a href=\"https:\/\/decoder.link\/sslchecker\/\">this tool<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More details on <\/span><strong>zmcertmgr<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tool usage can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.zimbra.com\/wiki\/Administration_Console_and_CLI_Certificate_Tools#ZCS_Certificate_CLI\">Zimbra Wiki<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guidelines on additional SSL options configuration can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.zimbra.com\/wiki\/How_to_obtain_an_A%2B_in_the_Qualys_SSL_Labs_Security_Test\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When your certificate is activated and issued, you can proceed with installation on Zimbra.
