{"id":92,"date":"2019-07-09T07:32:17","date_gmt":"2019-07-09T07:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/?p=92"},"modified":"2023-11-02T13:10:00","modified_gmt":"2023-11-02T13:10:00","slug":"what-is-a-multi-domain-ssl-certificate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/what-is-a-multi-domain-ssl-certificate\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Multi-domain SSL Certificate?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/domain-type\/multi-domain-ssl-certificates\"><strong>multi-domain certificate<\/strong><\/a> is designed to secure many domain and\/or subdomain names.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These certificates are mostly used to secure the services of Microsoft Exchange Server (versions 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013), Office Communications Server 2007 or Mobile Device Manager.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These certificates can secure the combination of completely unique domains and subdomains with different TLDs (Top Level Domains) except for the local\/internal ones:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>www.example.com<\/li>\n<li>example.org<\/li>\n<li>mail.another-domain.net<\/li>\n<li>remote.anything.com.au<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note!<\/strong> These certificates do not support www subdomains by default. If you need to secure both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.example.com\">www.example.com <\/a>and example.com with one this certificate, both hostnames should be specified during the certificate activation. Check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/What-is-the-difference-between-www-domain-com-and-domain-com\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this article<\/a> for more details.<\/p>\n<p>Another advantage of these certificates is that they do not require separate dedicated IP addresses for the hostnames. If the server that hosts your domains does not have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/What-is-SNI-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SNI technology<\/a> and thus, does not support the proper functioning of separate certificates on one IP address, the these certificate will solve this issue. Being installed on one IP address, it returns the same certificate for all the domain names included in it, making all the domains secured automatically.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, it is easier to keep an eye on just one certificate and manage it when necessary, e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/how-can-i-get-my-certificate-reissued\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reissue<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssls.com\/knowledgebase\/how-to-renew-an-ssl-certificate\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">renew<\/a> it.
