Sectigo is the New Name of Comodo CA

Have you heard the big news? Our partner Comodo CA is changing its name to Sectigo! But don’t worry… As far as our customers are concerned, that’s all that’s changing. You will still get all the great technology, service and security you’ve come to expect. It’s just now it has a different name and brand. If reading’s not your thing, they’ve even done a video to explain the basics too.

Why is Comodo CA Changing to Sectigo?

It all stems from when Comodo sold its Certificate Authority wing to US private equity firm Francisco Partners back in 2017. Why? It’s because Francisco Partners focuses exclusively on technology investments, and saw great potential in Comodo CA’s Certificate business.

Now, here’s the catch. Comodo only sold its certification authority wing. It actually continued to trade as Comodo Group, offering products like antivirus software and its cWatch – anything that didn’t fall under the Certificate Authority banner.

This situation left two companies (Comodo Group and Comodo CA) with pretty much the same name, and both operating in the same industry space… You get the picture… Something had to give, and Comodo CA was first to take the opportunity to stand out and give itself a brand new identity.

So it’s Still Exactly The Same Company?

Absolutely it is. Sectigo may look to create extra services in the future, but the name change from Comodo CA and the rebrand is mostly to stand out in the marketplace, and to position themselves better as sector leaders and innovators. That means it’s:

  • Still the largest commercial Certificate Authority in the world.
  • Still been at the forefront of SSL technology for over 20 years
  • Still supplied over 100,000,000 SSL certificates
  • Still operates across over 150 countries worldwide

Most importantly, Sectigo is still the SSL partner we trust the most to bring you the best security and service – delivering peace of mind for both you and your website’s visitors. In fact, Sectigo have themselves stated that:

“The move is a key part of delivering on our mission to be the world’s most trusted, innovative, and customer-centric partner for securing every website, digital communication, and connected device — helping organizations of any size confidently maximize the digital frontier.”

What Happens To My Comodo CA Products?

Again, the only thing you will probably notice is the name change. All your Comodo CA products and certificates will still work, and every agreement and bit of security is still air tight. That includes the prices, which won’t budge either – you don’t have to pay for the shiny new website and logo! Everything stays the same except the product names. As you would expect, products like Comodo SSL with become Sectigo SSL. You may also see ‘powered by Sectigo’ on products that don’t/didn’t carry a Comodo CA name.

But on the whole, they will still be issuing:

  • Extended Validation (EV) Certificates
  • Organization Validation (OV) Certificates
  • Domain Validation (DV) Certificates
  • Wildcard Certificates
  • Multi-Domain Certificates (MDC)
  • Unified Communications Certificates (UCC)

Sectigo will still also maintain every one of the extra services, as well as the compliance and accreditation standards, of Comodo CA. This includes TrustLogo site seal, PCI scanning and ECC encryption and everything else Comodo CA offered.

What Are Sectigo Saying About It?

See for yourselves, here’s Sectigo’s brand manifesto in all its glory:

“We are at the edge of a digital revolution, an untamed frontier full of opportunities, and of pitfalls. Standing at the ready, between you and those who’d take advantage — is us. We think collaboration. We breathe security. Our drive is helping you. When we sleep, we dream of innovations. When we wake, we pioneer solutions — and deliver them to you. When Will All This Be Happening?

It’s already happened! It officially kicked off at the end of last year, so if you haven’t noticed any name or logo changes you should start to see them very soon. Comodo CA may still have a website, but it exits in name only. Everything is now 100% Sectigo.

Snappy new name, same service
